This workshop is all about how to take outdoor portraits using available light. We will be working with a carefully selected and experienced female amateur model.

No. of participants: 4-8 ppl

The maximum number of participants is eight people in order to guarantee that every participant has enough time taking pictures and asking questions.

FineArt Portrait

The workshop will focus on:

  • How to make use of available light 
  • How to choose the right location and time of day for your images 
  • What kind of gear ist helpful and how it can be used
  • Technical aspects such as camera settings
  • How to handle difficult light conditions
  • How to pose and direct a model
  • How a certain image look or mood can be achieved
  • Image composition and the effect it has

The workshop will enable you to take beautiful outdoor portraits with a limited amount of gear, using only available light. It will help you get an understanding of light conditions and their effect on your portraits as well as the kind of moods different light conditions can create.

Technical aspects such as camera settings and what lenses to use will also be covered. However, please be aware that a basic understanding of your camera and it’s manual mode are required in order to participate.

    Schedule:

    • 15:00 meet at the location (at the end of Galleriestraße in Munich, right next to Hofgarten - Google maps coordinates will be sent after signing up)
    • 15:00-16:00 introduction to the gear, tipps on how to use it, camera settings
    • 16:00-19:30 taking pictures at several locations (all within short walking distance)
      • Everyone will have a certain amount of time per location to take pictures of the model and direct / pose her as needed
      • I will talk about the light conditions at each location, give tips on how to deal with them, what to look out for, mistakes to avoid etc.
      • Any questions you have will either be answered straight away or can be discusses towards the end of the workshop
    • 19:30-21:00 Q&A at a nearby restaurant / cafe (please note that drinks or food are not included in the participation fee)

    Participation fee includes: 

    • Model fee
    • Rights to use the images non-commercially
    • PDF script "introduction to available light portrait photography"
    • Instructor fee

    Requirements

    Both beginners and advanced photographers are welcome. However, a basic understanding of your camera and how to operate it is required (navigating through manual mode, AV mode)

    Please bring the following equipment:

    • Camera that allows you to adjust settings such as aperture and exposure
    • Recommended: fast telephoto lens
      • ideally between 75 and 200mm with an aperture of f2.8 or wider
      • prime lenses tend to work best
    • Recommended: fast wide angle lens
      • ideally 35mm for full-frame or 24mm for cropped-frame/APS-C sensors with an aperture of f2.8 or wider
      • prime lenses tend to work best
    • These are the types of lenses I like to use. You can of course use different types as well!
    • Fully charged battery pack (bring a charged spare if you have one)
    • Memory card with enough free space for 400 pictures (shot in highest resolution or RAW)
    • Wear flat shoes (we will be walking on gravel paths / on grass
    • Bring drinks and snacks so you don't go hungry or thirsty

    Cancellation and refunds

    The number of participants ranges from 4 to 8 people. The participation fee will be refunded if we don’t reach the minimum amount of participants three days before the event (Wednesday, 6th of September, 4pm).

    In case of rain the event will also be cancelled and refunds will be paid in full. You will receive an e-mail two days before the event letting you know if the event will take place.

    Refund policy:

    In case of cancellation from the participant’s side refunds will be given as stated below:

    • Cancellation up to two weeks before the event (Sunday, 27th August, midnight): 100% refund
    • Cancellation up to one week before the event (Sunday, 3rd September, midnight): 60% refund
    • Cancellation after Sunday, 3rd September: no refund can be given
